Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and fillers can help get rid of fine wrinkles, creases, and frown lines. To avoid early signs of aging, it is best to consult to see if you are a candidate for fillers and injections. These injectable treatments are performed under our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Payne.
What are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are medications that affect the function of muscles by blocking the nerve transmission that excites the muscles to contract. By blocking these signals from the nerve to the muscle, this will in effect cause the muscles to become paralyzed. The most commonly used neuromodulator is botulinum toxin. There are several brand names of botulinum toxin, including the first to market — BOTOX® Cosmetic, as well as Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®. Each brand has a different sized molecule of the botulinum toxin. Although skin care is important, as we age our collagen becomes weaker. Neurotoxins are injectable proteins that assist in relaxing the muscles that cause facial wrinkles. The results can last anywhere between 3-6 months.
BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a botulinum toxin meant to assist in relaxing and paralyzing certain muscles responsible for fine lines and wrinkles.
Where is BOTOX® Cosmetic® typically injected?
BOTOX® Cosmetic can be injected into forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. The procerus muscles in the forehead cause deep furrows in the glabellar region, causing a more stern appearance that can be softened with BOTOX® Cosmetic injections.
BOTOX® Cosmetic can also be used to treat “gummy smiles,” where the upper lip elevates too high, showing not just the teeth but the gums as well. By injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic into the lip elevator muscles (levator labii superioris muscle, levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle, and the zygomaticus minor muscle), this will decrease the lip elevation and create a more pleasing smile.
How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?
BOTOX® Cosmetic results will typically last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.
What can I expect during your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?
Patients can experience mild discomfort. At the patient’s request, a topical numbing cream can be applied to assist in ensuring the patient is comfortable.
What should you expect after being injected?
Although cosmetic injectables are not considered cosmetic surgery, temporary mild tenderness, redness, and bruising can occur around the injection site. There is minimal to no amount of downtime. Patients can see a difference after 48 hours to 7 days after being injected. Patients are required to come back to the office for a follow-up in 10 to 14 days.
How much does BOTOX® Cosmetic cost?
In Houston, BOTOX® Cosmetic at our practice generally costs $16 per unit. Each person receives a different cost estimate based on their concerns and the amount of product required to achieve their desired results. Your injector can give you an idea of total costs once your concerns are evaluated in person.
Dysport
Dysport® is another neuromodulator like BOTOX® Cosmetic, but just a different brand name produced by Galderma. Some like Dysport® over BOTOX® Cosmetic and feel that it works just as well if not better. The different types of botulinum are produced where different sizes of the protein will cause a quicker onset and potentially longer results. This is not fully settled in the research and currently BOTOX® Cosmetic is still the most popular neuromodulator with Dysport® second in overall use.
Other Uses for Neuromodulators
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® can be used to treat other issues such as blepharospasms, chronic migraines, cervical dystonia, masseter and temporalis muscle hypertrophy, and excessive sweating.

What is JUVÉDERM Voluma®?
Voluma® is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid gel dermal filler that is used to restore lost volume to the face and rejuvenate the appearance of the mid-face. Voluma® is injected into areas of the face where moderate to severe volume loss has occurred.
Voluma® is known to smooth and lift areas of the face that have a loss of elasticity and volume, such as the cheeks. Voluma® is sometimes known for its “liquid lift” qualities. The gel provides instant volume to the area being treated. It keeps the skin hydrated and plump by helping the skin tissue retain water. Over time, the gel is safely absorbed by the body.
Voluma® is designed for maximum patient comfort. The formula contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic that numbs the treatment area to minimize any pain or discomfort caused by the injections.
Why use JUVÉDERM Voluma®?
Voluma® has been a popular dermal filler to smooth and lift areas of the face where severe volume loss has occurred, like the mid-face, jawline, and chin area. The appearance of the cheeks is heavily dependent on the amount of volume present. Fuller cheeks give the face a more youthful shape and appearance.
As the years go by, the face slowly loses volume as a natural result of aging. When this occurs in the mid-face, it can result in the appearance of flat saggy cheeks or may give the cheeks a more hollowed appearance; this can make the face appear gaunt.
