Preventing Dizziness After Liposuction: Tips from Dr. Eric Payne

At Texas Liposuction Specialty Clinic, we care about your safety and comfort during every step of your recovery. One common issue that can arise after liposuction surgery is dizziness or even fainting, known as syncope. This happens due to changes in blood pressure and other factors during the healing process, but the good news is that it can often be avoided by following a few simple steps.

Here are some preventive measures recommended by Dr. Eric Payne, our board-certified plastic surgeon in Houston, to help you stay safe:

1. Remove Compression Garments Slowly

Compression garments are essential for your recovery, but taking them off too quickly can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness. Make sure to remove your garments slowly and, if possible, have someone help you. Take off one layer at a time, waiting a minute or two between garments to give your body time to adjust.

2. Stand Up Slowly After Using the Bathroom

After urinating, stand up slowly to allow your body time to regulate blood flow. This simple action can significantly reduce the chances of feeling lightheaded.

3. Get Help During Your First Shower

For your first post-op shower, have someone nearby to assist you. This ensures that if you feel dizzy, they’re there to help. If you do start to feel lightheaded, sit or lie down immediately, whether you’re in the shower or elsewhere. It’s much safer to get low to the ground than risk a fall.

4. Don’t Be Alarmed by Fluid Drainage

You might notice a large amount of blood-tinged drainage on your absorptive pads. While it might look alarming, it’s actually a good sign! The more drainage you have, the less bruising and swelling you’re likely to experience.

5. Eat Before Removing Garments

Avoid taking off your compression garments or showering on an empty stomach. Low blood sugar can increase your risk of dizziness, so grab a snack before changing dressings or taking a shower to avoid hypoglycemia and reduce the chance of fainting.

6. Don’t Lock the Bathroom Door

Safety first — especially in the bathroom. Never lock the bathroom door while showering or using the restroom. If you experience dizziness or a fall, it’s important that someone can reach you quickly.

By following these steps, you can minimize the risk of dizziness and make your recovery process smoother. As always, if you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Texas Liposuction Specialty Clinic. Our team is here to support you every step of the way!
