Buccal fat removal, also known as cheek reduction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure performed to reduce the size or prominence of the buccal fat pads located in the lower cheeks. The buccal fat pads are natural fat deposits that contribute to the fullness of the cheeks. If you feel you have “chubby cheeks” or a “baby face,” or you would simply like to slim down your face for a more chiseled and youthful appearance, buccal fat removal may be an excellent facial plastic surgery procedure for you.

How is the Buccal Fat Removal Procedure Performed?
Buccal fat removal is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. It is considered a relatively straightforward surgery with minimal downtime, and patients can usually resume their normal activities within a few days. During the procedure, a surgeon makes an incision on the inside of the mouth, typically near the backs of the cheeks. The incision allows access to the buccal fat pads without any visible external scarring. The surgeon then carefully removes an appropriate amount of fat from the buccal fat pads, sculpting the cheeks to achieve a slimmer or more contoured appearance. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable sutures.
What Can I Expect From Recovery After Buccal Fat Removal?
Mild to moderate swelling and discomfort after the procedure is expected and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. You may also experience mild or moderate bruising of the cheeks which will resolve approximately two weeks after the procedure. You should have someone drive you home after the procedure to ensure safety. Most people can resume work the next day without any downtime; however, we suggest you refrain from strenuous activity and work that is physically taxing. You may resume all normal activities within a week of the procedure.
